The Sierra Club survey: "How Green is my bike ride?"

globalnav_pic.jpg

Is rock climbing really "green?" If not, why was this photo used as a Sierra Club online logo? The Sierra Club set new standards of moral parsing when it asks if biking, which is inherently "green," is really green enough.

The survey opens with an H.G. Wells observation on the glory of biking: "When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race," .--but of course The Sierra Club does despair for the future of the human race. You will be surprised at how "selfish" you've been on your bike. What would it take to mend your ways? Well, a perfect score on this survey could cost you your life.

I got an honest 85%, perhaps a bit too "green" for comfort.

I know we need to think about saving the planet every waking hour, but I've always seen biking as a guilt-free zone. Can we just keep it that way?

Thanks to Steve Fox for this story.

  1. I suppose we should accept that as a tongue-in-cheek survey. It's just good fun.

Otherwise, I would have some issues with it – particulary the limited choices. A lot of us get around on old bikes, which one could argue are "recycled." That would make them superior to bamboo.

I the meantime, I plan to continue to consume baby seal sandwiches on my rides and lube my chain with whale oil.

  2. I quit The Sierra Club over the brewing dispute on Mexican immigration (a significant group favored sealing our borders on "environmental" grounds).

Since then it hasn't occurred to me that the club might have a sense of humor.
