Bike lanes coming to Old Arcata Road!

Old Arcata Road links Eureka and Arcata through six miles or so of beautiful bayside landscape. However, the road includes a good number of sharp switchbacks with no shoulder at all all. Most cyclists give up on it after a couple of near death experiences. But now, thanks to quiet efforts by Chris Wentworth, Deputy Director of Humboldt County Public Works, this:

"By summer’s end, 7-foot wide bike/pedestrian lanes will flank Old Arcata Road from Three Corners to Stephens Lane.

The construction, which got underway last month, is the final phase of a project that began in the late 1970’s, according to Chris Wentworth, Deputy Director of Humboldt County Public Works. He told KHUM last week the project will connect with existing lanes running through Bayside to Arcata.

Construction will continue thru August."

I'm saddling up to check out this project out right now...

And the verdict is:...chalk lines. So something is happening, but you should hold off on actually riding this hair-raising stretch until we get beyond the chalk lines stage.

(Thanks to The Humboldt Herald for this great piece of news!)
