Driving home from The Monterey Jazz Festival we were stopped dead in our tracks south of Santa Cruz by a massive accident on Route 1. Apparently, a semi-truck had burst into flames in the southbound lane and collided with a Freeway overpass. Then in the northbound lane, rubbernecking motorists collided, closing the whole freeway.
We fled to Aptos for the night. More than 12 hours after the accident the freeway is still slowed to a crawl. Only bicycles are getting through.
