Next year you can deduct the cost of commuting to work on a bike!

The law that restricted commuting expenses to cars is about to find its way into the dustbin of history. Believe it or not, we cyclists got a piece of the financial rescue package. Starting on Jan 1, 2009 bicycle commuters will be able to deduct up to $20 a month for their costs. That's not much, I know, but it does add up. In two years you could amortize the cost of a decent commuting bike. And one can hope that in an Obama administration a program that both saves energy and promotes good health will find further support.

You'll need to do a bit of paperwork with your employer to set this up. Details here.

  1. Gordon,
Thanks for this news and the link to the League of American Cyclists. Encouraging and motivating employees to commute to work by bicycle is in keeping with the mission of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. This information has been forwarded to the Director of the agency and will likely be incorporated into 2009 policy for our agency of approximately 800 people. Thanks, Ken
