Iris and I were in Eureka inside LIVING STYLES FURNITURE just yards away from the Bay. That old wooden building sounded like it was about to come down on our heads. Somebody threw open the front doors and we dashed across the street, where the ground continued to move under our feet. Somebody said we shouldn't have run out of a building during an earthquake, but this one was one story and sounded like it was close to collapse.
Just to the south of us we heard an enormous clanging, banging sound and saw huge clouds of steam coming out of what appeared to be the PG&E power plant. Everyone had the same thought: could this have something to do with the "decomissioned" nuclear waste storage? We fled to Arcata, taking the inland route to avoid the Freeway bridge.
I still haven't seen a report on what exactly happened at the power plant. Could it have been some kind of routine procedure to let off steam? What was the noise about?
That distortion makes it look like something out of science fiction
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of "science fiction"...
